The Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean nation located on the Hispaniola island. This island is shared with Haiti and is part of the Greater Antilles archipelago.
With an area of nearly 50 thousand km2 and a population of approximately 10 million inhabitants, it is the second largest country in the Caribbean, only behind Cuba.
Although there is evidence that the first inhabitants of the Dominican Republic were the Tainos, it was not until 1492 that the island was discovered by Christopher Columbus, becoming the first European settlement in America.
At that time, the country was known as Santo Domingo, which later became the name of the capital of the Dominican Republic.
